As members of the Deaf community, we were disappointed to hear about the recent decision to add two non-deaf affiliated persons to the board that oversees the Texas School for the Deaf. This decision raises concerns about the future direction of the school and undermines the importance of Deaf culture and language. In this blog, we will explore the importance of Deaf representation and why this decision is problematic.
Deaf culture and language are unique and valuable. They are the foundation of our identity and help us to connect with others who share our experiences. Without Deaf representation, decisions can be made that do not consider the needs and perspectives of the Deaf community. This can lead to the erasure of Deaf culture and language, and a lack of support for important programs and services.
The Texas School for the Deaf is an important institution that provides education and resources for Deaf students. With the addition of two non-deaf affiliated persons to the board, there is a risk that decisions may be made that do not prioritize the needs and perspectives of Deaf students and families. It is crucial that the Deaf community has a voice in the decision-making process to ensure that the school continues to provide high-quality education and support for its students.
Deaf representation is essential in all areas of society, not just in education. We need Deaf leaders in government, business, and other fields to ensure that our community is heard and valued. When decisions are made without Deaf representation, it can have negative consequences for the entire community.
In conclusion, we urge the Texas Legislature to reconsider the decision to add two non-deaf affiliated persons to the board of the Texas School for the Deaf. The Deaf community deserves representation and a voice in decisions that affect our lives. We must work together to ensure that Deaf culture and language are respected and celebrated, and that our community is fully included in all aspects of society.
